New insights on the accuracy of photometric redshift measurements

چکیده
We use the deepest and most complete redshift catalog currently available (the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North supplemented by new HDF South redshift data) to minimize residuals between photometric and spectroscopic redshift estimates. The good agreement at zspec < 1.5 shows that model libraries provide a good description of the galaxy population. At zspec ≥ 2.0, the systematic shift between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts decreases when the modeling of the absorption by the interstellar and intergalactic media is refined. As a result, in the entire redshift range z ∈ [0, 6], residuals between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts are roughly halved. For objects fainter than the spectroscopic limit, the main source of uncertainty in photometric redshifts is related to photometric errors, and can be assessed with Monte Carlo simulations.

Cosmology with Photometric Surveys of Type Ia Supernovae
We discuss the extent to which photometric measurements alone can be used to identify Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and to determine redshift and other parameters of interest for cosmological studies. We fit the light curve data of the type expected from a survey such as the one planned with Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and also to remove the contamination from the corecollapse supernovae...
متن کاملCalibrating Redshift Distributions beyond Spectroscopic Limits with Cross-correlations
We describe a new method that can measure the true redshift distribution of any set of objects that are studied only photometrically. Measuring the angular cross-correlation between objects in the photometric sample with objects in some spectroscopic sample as a function of the spectroscopic z, along with other, standard correlation measurements, provides sufficient information to reconstruct t...
متن کاملThe effect of dust on photometric redshift measurement: a self-consistent technique
A new method is developed for estimating photometric redshifts, using realistic template SEDs, extending over four decades in wavelength (i.e. from 0.05 μm to 1 mm). The template SEDs are constructed for four different spectral types of galaxies (elliptical, spiral, irregular and starburst), satisfying the following characteristics: a) they are normalised to produce the observed colours of gala...
متن کاملOn the compared accuracy and reliability of spectroscopic and photometric redshift measurements
We present a comparison between the catalog of spectroscopic redshifts in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) recently published by Cohen and collaborators and the redshifts that our group has measured for the same objects using photometric techniques. This comparison is performed in order to fully characterize the errors associated to the photometric redshift technique. The compilation of spectroscopi...
متن کاملCosmology with photometric redshift surveys
We explore the utility of future photometric redshift imaging surveys for delineating the large-scale structure of the Universe, and assess the resulting constraints on the cosmological model. We perform two complementary types of analysis: (1) We quantify the statistical confidence and the accuracy with which such surveys will be able to detect and measure characteristic features in the cluste...
